Tracking your net worth with GnuCash

GnuCash Net Worth Barchart (sample data)One question I get a lot when people ask me about GnuCash is whether GnuCash does a good job of tracking things like portfolio value, stock values and net worth. My reply is usually something along the lines of "GnuCash is a very good personal financial management software application. Do you really think the developers would leave something like this out?"

Now I have to admit, day-to-day tracking of my stocks, my portfolio and my net worth aren't all that important to me. I focus more on the long term. What happens in the markets today might make for interesting discussion this weekend, but I'm not about to bring my own portfolio performance to that discussion. Nevertheless, people want to see this capability in their personal financial management software. GnuCash delivers it with ease.

GnuCash Net Worth Barchart (sample data)

Just like any other report in GnuCash, there are plenty of options to choose from. You probably don't want to change the default account settings options unless for some reason you have an asset or a liability you don't want included in your net worth.

The options you'll most likely want to change are the time window over which you want to see your net worth and the frequency within that time window you'd like to see it reported. If you like you can even set the time frame to yesterday and today, or even the current week. That way you can look at the effects of today's trading on your net worth.
