Don't leave home without just the right card
Submitted by Mark on 10 July 2007 - 6:22pm
Did you know American Express cards came in many different flavors? I'm not talking about the ones we're all accustomed to, like the regular American Express card, the Gold card, the Platinum card, the corporate card... You get the idea. I'm talking about the different plans within the American Express family of cards. If you didn't know this, here's your chance to learn something new. Yes, in case you're wondering, in addition to an opportunity to learn something - and possibly even personally profit by it, this is a for fee review.
The site where I picked up on this new found knowledge is the Americanexpress page on creditme.com. You should check it out. They have three full pages of different flavors of American Express cards on this site. Do you fly Delta? Stay at Starwood hotels? American Express has a card that will earn you rewards in those programs and many others.
Do what you do best, and hire out the rest
Submitted by Mark on 6 July 2007 - 3:59pmI do a bit of small business consulting in my free time. Mostly it's something I do for friends and friends of friends. I wouldn't say it pays many bills, but it's good networking and I get to learn a lot about people and about their businesses.
A fairly common problem for the small business owner, first time entrepreneurs are particularly susceptible in this regard, is a lack of understanding of how complicated running a small business can be. Many who go into business for themselves do it because they have a passion for the products or services they sell. All too often the new business owner finds out that running a business itself takes him or her too far away from the passion that brought him there in the first place. That's why, when I was offered the chance to review the MerchantOS point-of-sale site, I went for it. This is exactly the kind of service new business owners should look into if they're serious about their passion and running a successful business based on it.

Regular readers know I'm an outspoken advocate of owning and operating one and only one credit card. Having only one credit card in your wallet is good not only one of the best things you can do for your credit score, but it also helps you to keep expenses under control and greatly simplifies your record keeping tasks.
One of the problems I found about limiting my credit card accounts to only one was how to choose that single credit card account. In my case, I had multiple cards, so I had to decide which ones to drop. I had a lot of trouble deciding which one to keep. In the end I decided to scrap all of them and start from scratch. I opened up my web browser and started hunting through all the credit card sites I could find to narrow the field of candidates to just a few, and finally to the one, that I would apply for and use as my personal credit card.

First off, what is this site about? There is no "About us" page to access, but their tag line makes it pretty clear:

Motley Fool's UK credit card comparison tool

Here's a post for readers based in the UK. The good people at Motley Fool in the UK have asked me to do a paid review of their Motley Fool Credit Cards comparison site.
Now you all know I'm a stickler for managing my personal finances and financial well being. One thing I personally take very seriously is how I manage debt and credit accounts. I previously wrote about how managing your credit score is affected by how many credit cards you carry. I maintain my optimal credit score in part by carrying only one credit card for my personal use.
So as long as I'm only carrying one credit card, I went to great lengths to ensure that card has as many of the features I wanted when I signed up for it. I used one of the many credit card comparison sites to narrow my search to a few candidates and did my research from there.
